On November 12th we loaded onto a bus and set out for Shaker Lakes Nature Center! It was a snowy day, but that didn't stop us from learning about living and non-living things. We engaged in a lesson, and then went for a hike where we could discover living and non-living things outdoors. We even got to come back inside to touch a snail (a living thing!), and eat our lunch (after washing hands, of course). We had a great day exploring the great outdoors!
This past Friday, students had an absolute blast at the CIS Dance-A-Thon! Not only was the event a hit, but we also raised over $14,000 as a school - WOW! We had a busy Friday which also included the "Scream Team" from the Cleveland Cavaliers, math games, and finished off they day with ice cream sandwiches for filling our classroom bucket.
We have been reading "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds during Reading Workshop! In addition to making connections to our own lives, retelling the story, and more, we tried painting in class for the first time! We used watercolors to create our very own "dots." They are all unique and different, and we all practiced how to be respectful to the environment when using paints.
Today we welcomed Ms. Lestock's 2nd graders visit our room at the end of the day! We really enjoyed listening to them read stories to us. They will be coming by every Thursday afternoon to sit with us and demonstrate what great readers we will be when we are 2nd graders, too!
Today we took a walking field trip across the street to the police station! We had a chance to speak to police officers and ask questions, tour a police motorcycle, "monster truck" and patrol car, in honor of Jayson's birthday. We had to practice the essential agreements while walking from the school, especially "listen" and "stay with the group!" We all left with gifts and badge stickers from the officers. Special thanks to G'Johnathan's mom, Andrea for chaperoning the event and walking over with me and the students, and to Jayson's mom Temika for coordinating the visit. The students had a great time!
WOW! The first week of kindergarten is complete. Our year is off to a great start - I'm proud of every student in my class! Always, if you need to contact me please email. For additional forms of communication including a text-like feature, we will set up SeeSaw during Open House on Sept. 11th.
A few things I want to let you all know: ● Our classroom jobs rotate weekly. If your child is the "Ambassador" for the week I will let you know. On Friday, the ambassador can bring in three items from home to share with the class. ● Please only pack one snack for your child to eat at snack time if you choose to pack your own. Snack is only for 10 minutes, and multiple snacks makes it challenging to finish! ● Please send in a picture of your family! We will display these in our room. Some things we learned and practiced this week... ● Sharing. ● Getting to know one another. ● Speaking in front of the class and taking turns. ● Peace- how it sounds, looks, and feels. ● Using manipulatives and blocks. ● Letter names and sounds. ● Numbers up to 20. ● Kid writing - drawing thoughts on paper and using single letters and lines to represent words. ● Learning the proper use of crayons, markers, and glue sticks. We got to work with our new, personalized writing books today! We have been talking about how kid writing is different than adult writing, but is still great writing. Students worked on the carpet drawing their story, and then writing about it. I used "adult writing" underneath to show their words.
We have had an exciting first few full days in Kindergarten. We are getting to know our classroom and expectations. Here are some photos from our first few days in Kindergarten!
